Adult Education

The adult learning curriculum offers an extensive array of courses including Introduction to Judaism (Basic Judaism) as well as classes on Torah and Talmud, Bible, Theology, Hebrew, and book discussions. We hold an annual Scholar-in-Residence Weekend. Congregation Schaarai Zedek has other special lecture events as well.

Adult learning opportunities are many and varied throughout the year at Congregation Schaarai Zedek. Our rabbis teach an “Introduction to Judaism” course for those interested in converting to Judaism or wishing to expand their knowledge of basic Judaism. Our Rabbis also teach Spring Study Series. We hold a Saturday morning Torah study group (Sefer Ha-Aggadah or The Book of Legends ) for those who wish to study the weekly Torah portion. Bill Kalish, a congregant and Talmud scholar, teaches a spring course on selected books from the Bible. Barbara Shine Hicks spearheads a monthly Sisterhood Book Club. Participants read and review the books in group discussions at Congregation Schaarai Zedek.

The very popular “Introduction to Hebrew for Adults” continues to interest Schaarai Zedek congregants. The 20-week course gives class members the opportunity to celebrate an Adult B’nai Mitzvah during a Friday night Shabbat Service if they wish.
