Adult Hebrew

Adult Hebrew at Schaarai Zedek is designed for adults who want to build or strengthen their Hebrew skills in a supportive, low-pressure setting. Whether you are starting from the very beginning or looking to become more comfortable with the prayerbook, our classes help you gain confidence step by step.

Who These Classes Are For

Adult Hebrew is open to anyone who would like to learn. Classes are a good fit for adults who never learned Hebrew as children, those who want a refresher, parents with children in Religious School, and anyone interested in participating more fully in services and Jewish life.

What We Learn

Depending on the level and session, Adult Hebrew may include:

  • Learning or reviewing the Hebrew alphabet (aleph-bet)
  • Decoding words and sounding out Hebrew in the prayerbook
  • Common blessings and synagogue vocabulary
  • Key parts of the Shabbat and holiday liturgy
  • Basic Hebrew reading skills to support participation in worship and life cycle events

Class Format

Adult Hebrew is typically offered in multi-week sessions that meet once a week, either in person or on Zoom, depending on the schedule and interest. Class size is kept manageable so there is time for questions and individual support.

Do I Need Any Background?

No previous Hebrew experience is required for beginner classes. For more advanced sessions, a basic ability to recognize letters and sound out simple words is helpful but not required; we will clearly note any prerequisites when classes are announced.

How to Enroll

Upcoming Adult Hebrew sessions are listed on our calendar and in our eNews. Each listing will include dates, times, level, and registration details.
