2020-2021 Religious School Options

CSZ Outside

What is CSZ Outside?

Welcome to CSZ Outside! For this year, this program will be meeting at Circle “C” Ranch Academy (6204 Interbay Blvd, Tampa, FL 33611) for an outdoor, camp-style religious school experience. We will be holding two programs, one for PreK-5th grade and one for 6th-9th grade. Not only will we be able to offer excellent Jewish education, but we will also be able to draw on the on-site amenities for a fun, camp-inspired program.

When does it meet?

We will be meeting from 9 AM – 12 PM on Sundays. PreK-5th grades will meet for 14 sessions and 6th-9th grades will meet for 10 sessions. Please see our calendar for the exact dates!

What about the weather? Florida is pretty hot and rainy.

Great question! Our satellite site for this year, Circle “C” Ranch Academy, is covered with trees and much cooler than on the street. We will also have fans and water coolers so that students can refill water bottles.

In terms of rain, you will see “(rain date)” listed on our calendar. If we are rained out for a full Sunday, we will use one of the rain dates on the calendar. If it rains while we are on-site, we will move into the divided indoor spaces at the facility until the rain clears, while staying in our pods. Although our whole school can fit in the indoor spaces, we do not want to use them unless absolutely necessary while maintaining social distancing.

What is the curriculum like?

This year we are focusing on Jewish values. Each Sunday will feature a value that our students will explore through many modalities. We will also cover holidays, Jewish traditions, and Jewish identity. Every day, our students will explore the value through the lens of a specialty area, as well as their Judaics period. They may go to sports, art, science, nature, or drama. This will not only add to the fun of the outdoor program, it may spark a connection to Judaism through an activity they love.

What about Hebrew?

We begin traditional Hebrew instruction in 3rd grade. All of our 3rd-6th graders will have Hebrew as one of their rotations. We also offer online Hebrew as an optional Hebrew supplement. Students who would like to keep working on their Hebrew can sign up for an extra 30 minutes of Hebrew on Sunday afternoons or Wednesday evenings with a small group and teacher.

What is the plan for sanitizing and cleaning?

We are making sure our site is clean and our participants are safe through a few different methods:

  • Our CSZ maintenance staff will be coming to clean/sanitize the site before, during, and after we use it.
  • We will take temperatures and ask each family to complete a health survey before entering the site.
  • Only faculty and students will be allowed on the site, families will need to stay in their cars to pick up and drop off students.
  • Students and faculty will wear masks while on site.
  • Students and faculty will wash their hands upon entering the site.
  • Hand sanitizing stations will be placed around the site.
  • Keeping groups to 10-12 students.
  • Notifying our community of any changes in CDC standards or if there is a COVID-19 case in our school.

What is the cost?

The cost of our program is $395.80 per student and we have decided to keep tuition at our normal rate for this year. The Religious School is heavily subsidized and we will still be paying our teachers and purchasing supplies. We hope our members will think of this not only as tuition but as a way to ensure our school can continue after this year. Of course, we will make sure that religious school works for any family, so please do not let cost be the reason you do not participate. Contact mlevy@zedek.org with questions.

Can I start at CSZ Outside and move to online if something changes for my family?

Yes! We recognize that everything is fluid right now and we are prepared to adapt. Talk to us and we will help you move to the other program while helping your family stay connected to our community. Our curricula will complement each program choice and it should be easy to jump into either.

Will it be fun?

Yes! The world has forced us to think creatively and jump outside the box for this year. We have an innovative team in place who are going to make sure that this is a great year for our students and that we continue fostering a connection to Judaism, Congregation Schaarai Zedek, and our incredible community.

CSZ Online

What is CSZ Online?

CSZ Online is our way of keeping up the connection between our students and their Jewish identity, even when we cannot physically be together. We will meet over Zoom, as well as share videos and activities you can do at home.

When does it meet?

We will be holding 20 sessions of CSZ Online. Because we are also holding an in-person program on Sunday mornings, our online program will be in the afternoons. Here is the schedule:

Sundays
4-4:30 PM K-6th Grade Judaics
4:30-5 PM 3rd-6th Grade Hebrew (option 1)

Wednesdays
5:30-6 PM 3rd-6th Grade Hebrew (option 2)
6-7 PM 7th-9th Grade Judaics

What is going on with Hebrew?

We are allowing our online students to choose when they would like to attend Hebrew classes this year. You can choose between Sundays, right after your Judaics lesson, or Wednesdays afternoons. By offering a choice we will be able to keep our groups smaller and allow our students to get more individualized attention in our Zoom classrooms.

What is the curriculum?

Our online curriculum will mirror our outdoor curriculum and follow the same topics. We hope this will make it easy for students to join either program if they miss a week or want to move to the other model. Our Judaics lesson will include videos, discussion, and movement. Hebrew will cover as much of what we would learn in the classroom as possible, while also taking advantage of online resources and smaller, personalized instruction.

Will it be fun?

Yes! This is new for us, but we look forward to bringing in new technology, guest speakers, and programming we would not get to do in a different kind of year.
