Movie Night – Pleasantville

Saturday, July 17, 2021
5:30 PM - 9:00 PM

5:30 PM: Dinner
6:15 PM: Movie, “Pleasantville”
8:15 PM: Discussion

Join us this July as we share in some of Rabbi Weiss’ favorite movies and find the Jewish meaning they can add to our lives.

“Pleasantville” tells the story of two high school students, brother, and sister David (Tobey Maguire) and Jennifer (Reese Witherspoon). Impressed by David’s devotion to “Pleasantville,” a 1950s family TV show, a mysterious television repairman (Don Knotts) provides him with a means to escape into the black-and-white program with his sister. While David initially takes to the simplistic, corny world of the show, Jennifer sets about jolting the characters with doses of reality that unexpectedly bring a little color into their drab existence. As David and Jennifer bring their modern attitude into an era of purity and blandness, the town finally begins to change, even as some fight to keep everyone “sticking to the script.”

Following the movie, Rabbi Weiss will lead a discussion on the movie, dealing with its themes of freedom and repression and how we wrestle with the vision of an idealized past. For those who wish, the movie can also be viewed from home and you are welcome to join us for the discussion in person or via Zoom.

If you would like to join virtually, “Pleasantville” is available to rent or purchase online from iTunesAmazon Video, and Vudu.
