What is Jewish music, or rather, what makes music Jewish?
“Jewish Music” comes in many styles, genres, and contexts. This lesson will explore what it is about music that makes it Jewish. Cantor Cannizzaro will pose questions such as: What are the components that define Jewish music? What makes music sound Jewish? How does Jewish music both shape and reflect one’s own Jewish experience? Is music Jewish only if Jewish composers write it?
We will listen to music by both Jewish and non-Jewish composers (there will be some surprises here) and ask these questions and more. Bring your lunch and enjoy it as you watch and listen.
